Marital status letter is a document that confirms that the applicant is single and has capacity to enter into a marriage. This letter is derived and inferred from Section 10 (1)d  of the Marriage Act, Cap 251 which provides that; the registrar, at any time after the expiration of twenty-one days and before the expiration of three months from the date of the notice, shall there upon issue his or her certificate in Form C in the First Schedule to this Act; except that he or she shall not issue the certificate until he or she has been satisfied by affidavit— that neither of the parties to the intended marriage is married by customary law to any person other that the person with whom such marriage is proposed to be contracted.

This letter is therefore issued administratively by Uganda Registration Services Bureau (URSB) to Ugandans wishing to have their marriages performed outside Uganda.

The applicant presents the following documents in support of his or her application;

  • A recommendation letter from the LC1 chairperson of the locality where the applicant resides.
  • A photocopy of the applicant’s long birth certificate to prove parentage.
  • Proof of nationality for example a passport or national Identity card.
  • A registered statutory declaration from the applicants to prove that he/she is single.
  • A registered statutory declaration from the parent to prove that their son/ daughter is single.


Fees Payable:

Registration of statutory declaration – Ug Shs. 30,000/=

Single status letter – Ug Shs. 25,000/=
